Dr Faber, how do you diagnose and treat TMJ disorder?
We
gather complete information about your health and dental history,
take digital radiographs and images of your dentition, and take
impressions of your dentition so we have models of your teeth for
analysis. We also have a series of radiographs taken that will allow
us to analyze your temporomandibular joints and cervical posture. We
then use sophisticated computerized instrumentation to collect and
analyze the sounds your temporomandibular joints make and
additionally we evaluate the function and activity of the chewing
muscles. We are able to record and analyze the movement of the jaw
and determine ideal positioning of the jaw. If we determine that
muscles are more comfortable in a position that is different than
your usual jaw position, we will fabricate a very specific type of
diagnostic orthotic that will reposition your jaw to the new
position and allow us to confirm that this new position is
comfortable.
Following this diagnostic phase, depending on the
specific circumstances, several options may be possible to assure
this position is maintained: 1) orthodontics, 2) restoration of some
or all of the teeth to the new position, 3) coronoplasty, 4)
combination of two or more of the above, 5) semi-permanent orthotic.
In most cases Dr Faber sees, the symptoms related to
TMJ
disorders can be successfully treated to reduce or eliminate
the
discomfort. Postponement of treatment usually results in more damage to
the joint, muscles, or teeth.
