Causes of TMJ disorders

The exact cause of the disorder is unknown.  Some factors are related to an improper bite, poor posture, injury, arthritis, severe stress, or a combination of factors.  Sometimes clenching or grinding the teeth is involved.

These factors can cause muscles to tire and the ensuing hypertonicity entraps nerve and vascular structures causing even more pain.  Repeated occlusal trauma may affect the temporomandibular joints, resulting in tissue damage, muscle tenderness, and more spasm, perpetuating a cycle of pain.
